Charlie served the Teays Valley School District for 31 years as Middle School Physical Education teacher, coach and athletic coordinator before retiring in 1988. He coached football for 11 years, had three undefeated seasons and ten of his eleven teams finished with winning records. His overall record was 45 wins, 15 losses and 3 ties.

His basketball coaching career at the Middle School spanned 27 years. During those years, his teams won nearly 77% of their games with a record of 254 wins 77 loses. He had two undefeated seasons, three league championships and 26 of his 27 teams finished with winning records.
